It’s Still Christmas!
Dear Friends,
The Gospel of John has no nativity story. No angels, shepherds, stars, magi, nothing. Instead, John begins by quoting the opening words of Scripture, “In the beginning,” and like the author of Genesis John is talking about creation.
According to John, the one who created in the beginning has become part of the creation. Why? Because the cosmos that has fallen into darkness needs light. And despite the best efforts and intentions of humanity, we could not make right what went wrong. And so the Word became flesh to do what we could not. God became human to commence the rectification of all things.
This is good news for all of creation. It is hope for suffering sinners like you and me. According to John, the gift of Christmas is new creation, and this means that you and I, and everything in this world, will be healed.
